Parson's JoonMoon creates Augmented Shadow: 'fantasy ecosystem' uses tangible objects/tabletop interface

Augmented Shadow is a design experiment producing an artificial shadow effect through the use of tangible objects, blocks, on a displayable tabletop interface. Its goal is to offer a new type of user-experience. The project plays on the fact that shadows present distorted silhouettes depending on the light. Augmented Shadows take the distortion effect into the realm of fantasy. Shadows display below the objects according to the physics of the real world. However, the shadows themselves transform the objects into houses, occupied by shadow creatures. By moving the blocks around the table the user sets off series of reactions within this new fantasy ecosystem.

This experiment brings augmented reality to the tabletop by way of a tangible interface. The shadow effect is an ‘interface metaphor.’ Second, the unexpected user experience results from manipulating the users’ visual perceptions, expectations, and imagination to inspire re-perception and new understanding. Therefore, users can play with the shadows lying on the boundary between the real, virtual, and fantasy.

STARLIGHT RUNNER to develop PS game RED FACTION as transmedia franchise- tv movie, back story= big storyverse

THQ Taps Transmedia Producer STARLIGHT RUNNER ENTERTAINMENT to Prime RED FACTION® Franchise for Extension Across Major Media Platforms

On the heels of THQ’s announcement to adapt popular third-person, open-world action videogame franchise, Red Faction, into a television movie, leading interactive entertainment developer and publisher THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced a deal with Starlight Runner Entertainment, a New York based production company specializing in transmedia storytelling, to further develop Red Faction for extension across all major media platforms including film, television, online, mobile, books and graphic novels.

Agoura Hills, CA (PRWEB) June 9, 2010 -- On the heels of THQ’s announcement to adapt popular third-person, open-world action videogame franchise, Red Faction, into a television movie, leading interactive entertainment developer and publisher THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced a deal with Starlight Runner Entertainment, a New York based production company specializing in transmedia storytelling, to further develop Red Faction for extension across all major media platforms including film, television, online, mobile, books and graphic novels.

Leaders in the space, Transmedia Producers Jeff Gomez and Mark Pensavalle will expand the fictional universe mythology and further develop core story elements of Red Faction by applying their proprietary, transmedia development process. As part of this process, Gomez and Pensavalle will develop a backstory that connects the previous videogames in the franchise, as well as an upcoming fourth videogame entry and the recently announced Red Faction television movie. This work lays the foundation for future iterations of the franchise across a variety of touch points.

THQ will hold all rights to Red Faction transmedia projects and plans to work with partners to publish and distribute content outside of the videogame space. Gomez and Pensavalle will work closely with THQ’s Executive Vice President, Danny Bilson, and Director of Fiction Development, Paul DeMeo, on all creative implementations and will continue to consult on storylines and transmedia extensions for upcoming Red Faction projects. Transmedia production is set to kick off immediately.

“We were impressed by Starlight’s demonstrated track record with numerous high profile transmedia projects including Avatar, Halo and Pirates of the Caribbean,” said Danny Bilson, Executive Vice President, THQ Core Games. “In order to fully realize our vision of creating franchises that successfully transcend gaming, we’re tapping the best in the business with Jeff and his team to make our game fiction more robust and consistent across multiple media platforms.”

“Red Faction has cultivated an excited and participatory fanbase over the last decade that is eager to engage and learn more about the Red Faction world, characters, and storylines,” said Jeff Gomez, Transmedia Producer and CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment. “Danny Bilson is a thought-leader in the videogame and entertainment space and a big advocate of transmedia storytelling - we are thrilled to be working with him and his team to create content that will excite the Red Faction community by allowing them to discover the secrets of the Red Faction universe.”

Jeff Gomez and Mark Pensavalle will be credited as Transmedia Producers on the project and are the first producers to claim the credit since it was ratified, with guidance from Gomez, by the Producer’s Guild of America in early April 2010.

Red Faction is a 3rd person, open-world shooter set on Mars, 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction. Players take on the role of freedom fighter Alec Mason, with the newly re-established Red Faction movement, as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force (EDF). The first installation of Red Faction was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh by THQ and Volition.

Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller premiere Ship O' Fools at Luminato

It's the last thing you expect to find in the heart of Toronto: a salvaged thirty-foot Chinese junk. But its location isn't the only thing that makes this Luminato commission intriguing.

The image of the ship of fools, an uncaptained vessel full of aimless passengers absorbed in vanity and frivolity, has long fascinated writers and artists. Now, in a commission from Luminato, award-winning Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller turn this metaphor into a playful reality: enter the cabin of their transformed ship and find yourself immersed in a meticulously detailed experience of a wandering vessel.

The illusion is a delight in itself, but the cabin is also occupied by a traveller seeking salvation. Every element of your experience aboard reflects the traveller's obsession - and invites you, the viewer, to ponder your own voyage through life.

This event has been extended to June 28th.

To coincide with Ship O' Fools the AGO is presenting the rarely viewed work by Janet Cardiff, The Whispering Room, 1991, from June 9th to September 26th. Click here for AGO exhibit details.
