Within three years of starting his Hollywood career, Douglas Trumbull changed the moviemaking process irrevocably; working with Stanley Kubrick on 1968’s 2011: A Space Odyssey, when he was barely 25, he not only created a landmark cinematic experience, but pioneered special-effects techniques which filmmakers continue to use even today. Since then he’s done Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Blade Runner, and most recently, Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life. And almost 45 years later, Trumbull still doggedly pushes the industry to grow and change, even if he finds resistance – or worse, indifference - to innovations which he claims will not just revolutionize current technologies but resuscitate the dwindling receipts studios and exhibitors try to squeeze from the theatrical experience.

Ontario film and television industry boosts provincial economy | Arts | National Post

Film and television industry in Ontario contributed $1.26-billion to provincial economy in 2011
Melissa Leong Feb 7, 2012

"David Cronenberg, a 19th century police detective and flesh-eating zombies have helped Ontario’s film and television industry reap a record $1.26-billion for the provincial economy last year.

The figures mark a 31% increase or $300 million from the previous year and are the best results recorded since the Ontario Media Development Corporation started gathering data in 1986.

The real success story, Karen Thorne-Stone, president and CEO of the corporation, said Tuesday, is that domestic production accounts for almost 70% of all activity. She cited the success of home-grown television shows such as the police dramas Flashpoint and Murdoch Mysteries...."

Facebook Is Quickly Becoming The Most Important Tool In Movie Marketing

Noah Davis | Nov. 2, 2011

Facebook

is becoming the most important tool in movie marketing, because it can generate huge amounts of buzz for next to nothing.

Speaking at the Social Media Analytics conference, Eric Kuhn said the social network is on its way to becoming more important than a Super Bowl ad when it comes to debuting trailers.

For example, the United Talent Agency agent said that Paramount spent $3.1 million on a "Transformers 3" Super Bowl ad. That resulted in 37,000 tweets.

Not too bad.

But the model is shifting online, he explained.

In October, "The Avengers" trailer dropped. Instead of spending huge money on advertisements, Disney chose to debut the hotly-anticipated two-minute clip to their 2.3 million Facebook fans.

Total cost: free.

The result: 61,000 tweets about the movie, more than a third more.
